Choose the right USB-C dock

The connector fits—but that does not guarantee every feature will work.

USB-C describes a connector shape, not one fixed set of capabilities. Check whether your laptop supports charging, video output, and the data speed the dock requires.

Four compatibility checks

  1. Charging power: The dock and its power supply should provide enough wattage for your laptop under normal load.
  2. Displays: Confirm the number, resolution, and refresh rate supported by both laptop and dock.
  3. Ports: Count what you actually use—USB-A, Ethernet, card reader, audio, and storage.
  4. Operating system: Some multi-monitor designs require drivers or work differently on macOS and Windows.

A dock from an established manufacturer with firmware updates and clear support documentation is usually worth more than a long port list with vague specifications.
